BUYING "LOCAL"

A message from your Executive Director...
Trends amuse me, particularly when those trends are reinventions of age-old ideas. Take this Buy Local thing. Every time I see something portraying this as a 'novel' initiative, I chuckle to myself. Is purchasing goods and services from one's neighbor really a new idea? Of course not. But, trendy or not, this is just the sort of mindset I can get behind.
Buying local is one of my favorite contemporary themes in community development. Several arguments to shop, play and buy local are convincing, not the least of which are that it keeps dollars and jobs in our region, thereby enhancing local prosperity. And then there are the intangibles. Buying local provides the opportunity to interact with and support your neighbor. It preserves the unique character of your community. It allows for the best possible customer service, as local businesses want and need to keep you happy and are often able to get what you need, not what sells the best in other regions.
So let's assume for a moment that you stellar Sebasticook Valley businesspeople agree with me: 'Tis nobler to buy from someone who shares your local calling area than someone who's name you don't know (as often as possible, anyway). I'll give you the same suggestion I've been giving myself since I first arrived here at the Chamber. In order to best-serve your neighbors, examine your business practices, your customer service and your product, and ask yourself:
What am I doing to encourage my neighbors to "buy local"from me?

"SPARKLE 2009—the Party You Won’t Want to Miss!"

Plans are underway for "SPARKLE 2009—the Party You Won’t Want to Miss!"
Mark your calendar for Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 from 6:00 to 10:00 pm and plan to join together at Millennium for one of the most fun times you’ll ever have!

SPARKLE 2008 raised more than $14,000 and enabled the Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce to present a check for $1,360 to each of eleven area charities that participated in this annual event.

Area charities are encouraged to apply to be one of the beneficiaries of this year’s charitable fundraiser. A selection committee will choose charities or organizations throughout the 12-community region that is served by the Chamber. Multiple charities from one community may be chosen if a community fails to select or nominate a charity.

All applicants must be a not-for-profit club or organization. A 501 (c) 3 IRS designation or the ability to work with an organization that has that distinction and will act as your fiscal agent will be helpful. (All towns and school districts qualify.) The application can be downloaded from the link below and is also available at the the Chamber Information Building (log building near Wal*Mart).
