The town of Exeter is a true rural community in the upper reaches of the Kenduskeag Valley where officials proudly report they are more cows than people.

The rolling countryside is made up of picturesque farmland still growing the potatoes that the early settlers relied on, but also building on its reputation as prime dairyland. With about 1,500 cows now tallied in the four-legged population, the town’s showcase Stonyvale Farm is working up to 1,000 milkers. There are about 700 milkers now at the farm’s Fogler Road location.

The town itself is 36 square miles or 23,040 acres, located in the upper reaches of the Kenduskeag Valley. Farming has been a mainstay since its earliest days when the motto was “raise what you feed and feed what you raise.” Cultivation was done with a one-horse cultivator followed by a run over the potatoes with a Crowell horse hoe. The rest involved a hand hoe and a "bent back."

Very little has changed. The one-horse cultivator has been replaced by the tractor but there are still long hours and hard work to run a farm. Today of the 23,040 acres Exeter has 3,911 acres classified as cropland.

In addition to farming Exeter has several businesses in town that are either in support of or use agricultural products. Exeter is home to the Memory Lane Museum that is a extraordinary collection of antique vehicles of all kinds, You will enjoy looking at the display and maybe it will take you back in time to remember or imagine what life was like. Because of the stewardship coupled with modern farming practices, Exeter should be able to be known as "The Agricultural Center of Penobscot County" for many years to come.
