Palmyra is a diverse community of small farms, former farms and suburban-rural homes. The community is also fast becoming an appendage to the commercial sprawl of Newport’s Triangle intersection. Much of eastern Somerset County and western Penobscot County can be viewed from its hilltops. On a clear day, the views can include the White Mountains to the west and Maine’s Mt. Katahdin to the north.

It also is the home to the Chamber Information Building located at the edge of the new Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot on U.S. Route 2.

The community of Palmyra is bisected by Route 2 and also by Interstate 95, but continues to thrive on both sides of the busy highways. It’s unusual configuration, close proximity to highways traveling in four directions and spectacular views has made the town an attractive home to many commuters.

It is home to the only 18-hole golf course in the Sebasticook Valley area. The Palmyra Golf Course and RV Resort is located on Lang Hill on the north side of U.S. Route 2 and attracts golf and RV enthusiasts from a wide area, as well as travelers passing through the region. Farther west on Route 2, Grignon’s Wildlife and Taxidermy Museum features displays of Maine creatures in natural settings, captured by taxidermy artist Reimond Grignon.

Three small ponds dot the Palmyra landscape including Whites and Hicks Ponds and Nokomis Pond that serves as Newport’s drinking water supply.
