St. Albans is a picture-postcard New England community nestled as it is in the valley with Big Indian Lake and its outlet stream with St. Albans Mountain and Devils Head forming a fall foliage backdrop. The center of the community is the St. Albans Union Church flanked by streets with white clapboard homes and punctuated with two historic halls, the fire station, a new post office and three general stores.
The town is both a lakeside and farming community. Its population of 1,836 residents often swells by more than a 1,000 when the seasonal residents return for the summer months. Situated between the mountains and the lakes, both Big Indian and Great Moose Lake, St. Albans is an outdoor recreational treasure, summer and winter. Both lakes are popular fishing and boating destinations.
Public access is provided to Big Indian Lake via the Town Landing Road off Route 23. A small park has been established at the lake’s outlet and close to the general store and town hall.
As a small rural community, the town’s business is conducted from the historic town hall, a building meticulously restored in recent years to an earlier splendor. Regular community suppers are often held at the historic Grange Hall on the same street.
Each summer, townspeople organize a celebration of their community, the surroundings and visitors with Summerfest, featuring a parade, community meals, a play and games and activities for all ages.
