Dexter is located along Moosehead Trail (Route 7) in the southwestern portion of Penobscot County, about 30 miles northwest of Bangor. Moosehead Trail takes travelers from Interstate 95 in Newport north toward Dover-Foxcroft and the Moosehead Lake Region and passes through the heart of Dexter’ commercial and recreational districts.
Lake Wassookeag, a 1,062 acre lake, named by the Penobscot Indians for ‘shining water,’ borders Dexter’s busy business district. The lake is known for its supply of landlocked salmon, trout and togue, and is a favorite year round fishing spot. Most of the lake is navigable by boat with the addition of a new boat launch to the Little Wassookeag side of the lake in 2000. The lake also provides the town’s water supply and is subject to several town ordinances to protect water quality.
Dexter also offers a municipal 9-hole golf course, driving range, public beach, campgrounds, picnic areas and a small regional airport. Dexter is the original home and namesake of the world famous Dexter Shoe Company. The town is actively involved in economic development focusing on future opportunities for Dexter’s progressive and skilled workforce.
